High-tech Cleanings
Professional cleanings are the only viable way to remove
Calculus (Tartar), which traps plaque along the gumline. Calculus
(Tartar) forms over time by not removing plaque build up. This build
up can lead to gum disease (Periodontal disease), which is an infection
of the gums that can destroy bone and other structures that support
teeth.
In the early stages of Periodontal disease (Gingivitis), gum tissue
may become swollen or red, and may even bleed. Over time your gums can
seperate from your teeth and pockets can form. In good health this
pocket or space should not be much deeper than three millimeters.
Once it gets deeper than this, it becomes increasingly difficult to
keep clean and deterioration of the structures will continue. If the
disease is left untreated, your teeth may eventually become loose,
fall out, or need to be removed by the dentist.
Depending on your oral health, we will recommend two or more
cleanings per year. For patients with advanced gum problems, we
can provide scaling and root planning. Using this treatment
we have often been able to avoid gum surgery.
Preventing and treating gum disease in its earliest stages is
the best way to maintain periodontal health. Loose teeth tighten;
bleeding is minimized, breath is not offensive; surgery may be
minimized, or prevented; and patients keep their teeth healthy.
To accomplish this, the first step is to start complete oral home
care (daily brushing, flossing, etc.) by the patient. Periodontal
disease must be viewed as a problem to be brought under control and
kept that way.
