Periodontal Disease
Disease which affects the periodontal tissues
or regions including the gums, cementum,
periodontal membranes and alveolar bone.
- Gingivitis — Inflammation of gingival
tissue without loss of connective tissues.
- Gingiva Tissue — Soft tissues
overlying the crowns of un-erupted teeth and
encircling the necks of those that have erupted,
serving as the supporting structure for
sub-adjacent tissues.
- Periodontitis — Also known as
pyorrhea, it is the inflammatory reaction of the
tissues surrounding a tooth or the root of a
tooth.
- Plaque — A soft sticky substance that
accumulates on teeth composed largely of
bacteria and bacterial derivatives.
- Alveolar Bone — The bone to which
teeth are attached.
- Cementum — The hard connective tissue
which covers the root of a tooth.
- Calculus — Hard deposit of
mineralized plaque which is attached to crowns
and/or roots of teeth.
