Sealants

Sealants are primarily used on the permanent
back teeth of youngsters who are prone to decay.
Often, these patients have had a high rate of
decay in their primary (baby) teeth. Many of
these youngsters have exceptionally deep grooves
that are difficult to keep clean.
Sealants prevent foot and decay-causing
bacteria from lodging in the grooves of back
teeth. This helps the child through the
decay-prone years. Modern plastics allow
highly predictable and durable results without
requiring drilling or anesthetics.
Sealants are rarely used on adults because
previous placement of fillings would not allow
sealant to adhere to tooth properly.
